In one video, a man said he thought about the sewage system created during the Roman Empire every time he goes to the toilet.
Aside from toilets, society has a lot to thank the Romans for. From roads to aqueducts, the Romans had a hand in many inventions. At one point, the Roman Empire controlled around two million square miles of territory.
That means there’s plenty of European destinations where Britons can get to grips with Roman history hands on. Even London has its fair share of Roman ruins.

Carnuntum in Austria – The gateway to antiquity
Known as “The Gateway to Antiquity”, Carnuntum in Austria was a significant Roman city on the border of the Roman Empire. Fans of the period will be able to explore the reconstructed town and feel like a Roman.
The city’s Roman Baths are the only worldwide that were built to be fully functional at their original site using ancient construction methods. They’re heated by a Roman style underfloor system.
On certain days, tourists can even watch gladiators battle while the reconstructed gladiator school is always open.
Germany
It might not be the first destination that comes to mind for Roman history but Cologne has some incredible relics of the Empire.
From the old Roman watchtower to the mosaic city wall in Cologne’s Old Town, there’s plenty of sites to learn more about the Empire.
At Borg in Saarland, history fans can check out the Roman Villa which was excavated in the 1980s and even serves meals based on Roman recipes.
