The beautiful island just a four hour flight from London where it’s still 22C in January | Travel News | Travel

As the January blues approach amid cold nights and short days, thousands of Brits will be looking for a bit of winter sun to escape the winter chill.

This beautiful island paradise is just a four-hour flight from London, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing January getaway while also offering something for the more intrepid traveller.

While Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain is a popular destination during the summer months, it’s less popular in January meaning fewer tourist crowds.

Best of all, perhaps, is the fact that the island has an average maximum temperature of more than 22C even in January, according to TUI – the winter is typically mild and sunny.

The average overall temperature is 18C, balmy compared to much of the UK. Some people even continue to swim in the 19C water in January, although it may be slightly chilly for some.

Lanzarote differs from the other Canary Islands due to its volcanic nature. It offers incredible moonscapes for travellers who wish to trek and aren’t content sitting by the beach.

Lava fields with black and red earth contrast with pristine whitewashed houses to make for a stunning display on the island which doubles as a biosphere reserve.

Beach lovers won’t be disappointed by the island’s pristine white and golden sands around Lanzarote’s resort hotspots.

Many of the island’s beaches form in the shelter of lava flows with calm waters and few currents meaning even those who aren’t strong swimmers will be at home in the shallows.

Return flights to the island can often be found for under £100 meaning travellers on a budget won’t have to shell out too much for a winter escape.

Just a four-hour flight from London, Lanzarote makes for great place to enjoy some winter sun and relatively hot weather, even in January.
