British expat leaves Spain due to ‘miserable’ economic situation | Travel News | Travel

Spain usually tops the dream list of destinations for wannabe British expats. But good weather, healthy food and cheaper houses isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, according to some former British expats.

On Reddit, one former expat said the job and economic situation in Spain was “way worse” than they’d expected.

‘Kopperol’ said: “The job and economic situation in Spain is famous and it was a lot worse than I was expecting. Like way, way, way worse.

“I lived in Spain for a year and although I loved living in the country, the job situation is what made me go back home.

“When I first went to Spain, I wasn’t expecting to have a stellar career and I was just happy to tip away at a basic job because I was more interested in the lifestyle.

“However, in the end it didn’t make it worth staying in Spain because I basically felt like I was throwing my qualifications and hard work away.

“I met so many expats that had been living there for a few years and even though their lives sounded good on paper, they were miserable.”

British expats will struggle to find a job in Spain if they don’t speak Spanish and may find they’re not able to use their qualifications.

Although Spain was generally rated as a great place to live in the latest InterNations Expat Insider survey, it didn’t do well when it came to finding work.

Malaga was the highest rated Spanish city and it didn’t earn a place in the top 10 ranking. Madrid and Alicante came near the bottom of the table.

Expats in Alicante said the local work culture didn’t promote creativity, independent work and flexibility.
