A flight attendant has taken to social media to debunk some common myths about air travel.
Brodie Capron, who shares her insights on TikTok, addressed questions about drinking tap water on flights and why window shades need to be up during takeoff.
Many travellers believe that they should only drink bottled water on planes due to rumours that the filters are rarely cleaned.
However, Brodie assured passengers that the tap water on Virgin Australia flights is perfectly safe to drink. She said: “Is the water safe to drink? Yes, it is. It’s filtered, and it’s clean.”
She also explained the reason for raising window shades during takeoff. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not so that passengers can enjoy the view, but rather so they can see the engines, which flight attendants cannot. She stated: “You’ve got to let us know if something happens.”
Finally, Brodie put to rest the myth that waste from plane toilets is jettisoned into the sky. Instead, it goes into a sewage tank that is emptied after landing.
She also answered a question many passengers wonder about. She explained: “Can the doors be open mid-flight? Look, unless you have superhuman strength, no.”
Brodie went on to say that your hand luggage must not be too heavy because the storage bins above your seat “can only hold so much weight”.
And if you’ve ever thought you might feel tipsier in the sky, you’re right! Brodie says it’s true, “because of the lower oxygen percentage in the air, the effects of alcohol are greater”. So she suggests making smart choices when drinking on a plane.
