Royal Caribbean suspends all cruises to popular destination | Cruise | Travel

Royal Caribbean has cancelled all its planned May sailings to Labadee in Haiti due to continued unrest.

The cruise line had halted trips to its private island in mid-March and has now extended the ban until at least the end of May.

A spokesperson said: “We have suspended all visits to Labadee fleetwide through May 2024, and we continue to monitor the situation with our Global Security and Intelligence team.”

Several itineraries will be affected by the cancellation with the line’s Allure of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas all due to visit Labadee in May.

Guests may be taken to an alternative destination such as Royal Caribbean’s private resort, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas or may get another sea day.

Although Labadee is a private destination for Royal Caribbean ships, Haiti has sovereignty over the resort.

Haiti is currently undergoing civil unrest after a siege in March forced the country’s prime minister to step down.

A subsequent prison break saw 4,000 inmates escape and the following violence has left many dead.

Reports state that more than 53,000 people have been forced to flee Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital.

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Haiti. It said: “There are currently no British consular officials in Haiti and our ability to provide consular assistance is severely limited and cannot be delivered in person in Haiti.

“If you choose to travel to or stay in Haiti against FCDO advice, try to avoid all crowds and public events, and take appropriate security precautions.”
