This Scandinavian city is one of the best in Europe to visit in winter – and its cobblestone streets and charm will make you feel like you’ve been transported to a winter wonderland.
Aarhus in Denmark is known for the unique way it blends the old with the new and its fascinating architecture can’t be missed as you wander around its streets.
While many might opt for Copengahen, Aarhus offers a similar experience, but with far less tourists.
Visit the Latin Quarter which features an abundance of boutiques where you won’t get bored looking at all the handmade items.
There is plenty of culture on offer too – including the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum. The futuristic modern art exhibition delights its fans, with one visitor on Tripadvisor saying it was “amazing” with stunning “rooftop views” and an “awesome” collection.
Another must-do activity in the city is to visit Den Gamle By. This is an open-air museum that recreates historic Danish life. Visitors adore it, with one Tripadvisor user saying that they could spend all day there.
They said: “Absolutely amazing place! It really is like you are back in time.
“It was so interesting walking around fully immersed in the past. You could maybe spend all day here if you really took your time. My favourite thing in Aarhus.”
There’s plenty to do for thrill seekers too. Tivoli Friheden is a large amusement park with rides, games and activities. The park is tucked away in the Marselisborg Forest and it features a total of 50 rides. It is great to visit with children.
If you enjoy history, Aarhus Domkirke is a romanesque style cathedral in the city. It was built at the start of the 1200s and in the 1400s underwent a gothic update.
The church is the tallest in Denmark, at 93 metres long and 96 metres high. The altar of the church is considered one of Denmark’s great treasures. It was designed by the German painter-sculptor Bernt Notke in the 1400s and has a section that can be rearranged according to the time of year.
You can reach Aarhus directly by flying with Ryanair which offers flights from London. Or, you can fly to Copengahen and visit both cities as part of your trip. Copenhagen is located three hours away from Aarhus by train.
