Beautiful Italian hidden gem perfect to escape crowds of Venice and Rome | Travel News | Travel

A stunning coastal town in central Italy has been hailed as one of Europe‘s most underrated destinations.

Despite its prime location near beautiful beaches, proximity to more renowned cities, and rich history, Ravenna remains a vastly unexplored destination among foreign visitors.

Labelled a “hidden gem” by travel enthusiasts, Ravenna boasts the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its vibrant mosaic-adorned buildings.

Yet, it doesn’t attract the same level of tourism as Italian giants like Rome or Florence.

Travel blog DanFlyingSolo earlier this year spotlighted Ravenna on its roundup of Europe’s most underrated cities, praising it as one of Italy’s “unsung stars”.

The blog also offers tips for visitors, highlighting the Mosaic Museum, the exquisite local food, and the Emilia Romagna Riviera favoured beach spots essential experiences.

While Ravenna may fly under the radar compared to other cities, it stands out for its incredible array of mosaics available for public admiration.

The city is home to Byzantine mosaics that are showcased in the octagonal Basilica di San Vitale, the cruciform Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, and the 6th-century Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo.

These mosaics have earned high praise from Tripadvisor users, described as “justifiably world-renowned” and a “really important historical treasure”.

For those keen to immerse themselves in Ravenna’s rich history, there’s no shortage of cultural sites to explore, including numerous museums, churches, and mausoleums.

Lonely Planet refers to the city centre as “unassuming”, yet it holds a wealth of heritage waiting to be discovered.

Venture “off the beaten track” in Ravenna’s charming streets, and bustling piazzas, and entice your senses with its petite boutiques, inviting cafes and delectable eateries.

Visitors are inspired to uncover beauty spots and green parks, delving into the area far from the usual tourist trail.

Encircling Ravenna, guests find serene beaches such as Singita Miracle Beach and Pineta, along with a marina, national parks, and nearby cities like Forlí and Cesena for further exploration.

Accommodation options abound, from hotels to B&Bs, hostels, and vacation rentals, ensuring a cosy stay for every preference.

Ravenna is accessible from UK cities, with flights from London and Manchester to Bologna, located 50 miles away, and Florence (80 miles). Tourists can then take shuttle buses, and trains or hire a car to journey to the city.
