British tourists have been warned never to use the iron in their hotel room as it could be harbouring germs.
Mark Johnson, hotel expert and founder of H18YC, warned tourists they should never touch the iron in their room.
Mark said: “Unlike with other items in hotel rooms, it’s not standard practice to clean hotel irons every time a set of guests leaves.
“When they are cleaned, it’s rarely done thoroughly. As a result, hotel irons almost certainly harbour germs and bacteria from previous users.
“Using one on your clothes could end with you catching something from the previous guest and also it’s just kind of gross!”
A hotel iron might not be cleaned between guests so travellers might find that the handle is dirty.
Mark added: “Hotel irons are usually cheaper and of lower quality than those used by homeowners, meaning they may not have the same temperature control or steam capabilities, increasing the likelihood of damaging delicate fabrics.
“If a hotel iron is old and rusty, the iron oxide could be unwittingly transferred onto your clothes.”
Mark also warned travellers that the iron could transfer stains onto their clothing if it was damaged by a previous user.
Hotel rooms won’t always have an iron supplied and guests may sometimes need to ask to borrow one.
It’s important to check what condition the iron is in before using it on clothes as it could cause damage.
