English town named ‘prettiest’ place to visit in the UK due to its scenic views | Travel News | Travel

Perfect for a day trip if nearby, or a weekend getaway if travelling from afar, Britain’s prettiest town is a must-see.

According to travel experts, the town ranked highest on a number of factors, such as shopfront aesthetics, historic architecture, and viewpoints.

Other considerations when rating British towns were traffic levels and litter volume.

Put together by The Telegraph, the travel experts ranked Lewes, in East Sussex, as the prettiest place to visit in the UK.

The townscape is dominated by the remains of a Norman castle – the home to the fourth wife of King Henry VIII, Anne of Cleves.

At Anne of Cleves House, visitors can take a step back into time to explore how the Tudors and Elizabethans lived, worked and relaxed at home.

But the main attraction would be climbing Lewes Castle, which offers spectacular views across the Sussex countryside.

Surrounded by the South Downs National Park, set sight on rolling hills and unspoilt coastline.

One reviewer on Tripadvisor said: “The view from the tower is absolutely incredible.”

In the market town, there are beautiful boutiques, antique shops, bookstores, eateries and historic pubs.

Additional attractions include Southover Grange Gardens, National Trust’s Monk’s House, Blackberry Farm, and Firle Place.

Elsewhere, Queensferry near Edinburgh nabbed the title as the second prettiest town across the UK.

Queensferry offers the best views of the River Forth; spectators might catch sight of seals.

Then there’s Forth Bridge, a railway bridge that is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gorgeous stately homes in the area include Hopetoun House and Dalmeny House; both have majestic grounds and remarkable interiors.

Taking place from Sunday 4 to Saturday 10 August is The Ferry Fair; expect a parade, crowning ceremony, celebrations and festivities.
