Europe’s cheap city break with pretty buildings | Travel News | Travel

Searching for a bargain city break in 2024? An underrated city on Poland’s Baltic coast might be just the spot.

Gdansk isn’t quite as popular as Krakow, Poland’s beautiful southern city, but it’s well worth a weekend break and better yet, it won’t break the bank.

In a quick search on Skyscanner, I found return flights in March to Gdansk for under £50 return from Belfast, London, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.

A pint of beer costs under £3 on average in Gdansk while a meal out for two at an inexpensive restaurant comes to under £17.

Hotel or holiday let accommodation is also much cheaper than in other European destinations with rooms at four star hotels available for under £30 per person per night on Booking.com .

Gdansk is the Baltic Sea’s ‘amber capital’ and tourists will find the city’s old town is packed with amber boutiques.

The city’s main centre was rebuilt after it was destroyed in World War II and its pretty colourful buildings are the ideal photo backdrop.

Gdansk’s Neptune Fountain, which dates back to the early 17th century, is one of its main attractions and a must-see while in the city.

If you’re brave, order a cocktail made with goldwasser, or gold water from Gdansk. An iconic drink from the Polish city, this vodka contains pieces of real gold.

An inexpensive Polish treat, pierogi are dumplings stuffed with potatoes, meat or cheese and definitely one to try while in Gdansk.

Britons looking to visit in spring or summer, might also want to fit in a visit to the beach. Sopot, a Polish resort town, is just a half hour drive or train away from Gdansk.
