Greece’s hidden towns offer awe-inspiring scenery and a rich culture | Travel News | Travel

With Easter on the way, many tourists are looking for a quick and affordable getaway that offers beautiful surroundings and much warmer weather.

One of the best choices for some time away is Greece, with temperatures typically reaching about 17 degrees in some parts during March.

However, to help tourists beat the crowds of popular areas, such as Athens, the travel blog European Best Destinations suggested a number of hidden towns in the country.

One of the best destinations for a tranquil break in Greece is Assos, a rustic coastal village located on the island of Kefalonia.

A small fishing village that is shaped like a horseshoe, visitors can admire the colourful buildings and luscious hills, or visit the Assos Castle for free.

European Best Destinations also recommended a trip to the stunning Meteora, located alongside the Pindos Mountains in Thessaly.

By far, the most distinctive part of Meteora is the monasteries in the area, which are built on the top of pointed cliff faces and still active to this day.

Whilst tourists can take a look around, admiring the priceless artefacts and pieces of artwork housed in the monasteries, Meteora is also a good spot for spotting wildlife.

However, travellers looking to travel to a more convenient location in Greece without the crowds were advised by the blog to visit Agios Nikolaos on Crete.

Under an hour’s drive away from Heraklion Airport, Agios Nikolaos features the incredibly beautiful Vasta beach, which is surrounded by Pine Trees.

However, visitors looking to stay out of the water can also take advantage of one of the many restaurants on the seafront, many of which offer outdoor dining.

Finally, European Best Destinations suggested that tourists looking for a remote Greek island getaway that is still incredibly convenient should consider Cameo Island.

Located just 15 minutes away from the much more popular Zakynthos Island, Cameo does charge tourists to visit. However, the blog suggests it is worth it for the stunning views and quiet, sandy beaches alone.

Nevertheless, more tourists are becoming aware of the island, meaning it is important for tourists to check that it has not been booked for an event such as a wedding before they plan their trip.
