Lake Hallstatt in Austria is one of the most striking water landscapes in the country, its clear waters are home to a thriving ecosystem and it is situated in the mountains.
Nearby, you’ll find a picturesque alpine village which has a strong sense of community and is fascinating to explore.
The lake is a popular destination for scuba divers and if you want to take part in any other water activities, you can go rowing or take a pedal boat. These are both available to rent on the lake.
Some say it’s even more beautiful than Lake Como in Italy.
One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “For those postcard-perfect photos of Hallstatt town, visitors are advised to rent a boat and silently cruise along the coast to appreciate the ideal angles for pictures. We rented a small electric-powered boat that we drove ourselves which was great as we could decide where to navigate. I think we paid 20 or 25 euros which was well worth it.”
If you enjoy hiking, there are lots of great routes in the area, you can explore the steep slopes of the Dachstein karst mountains where you’ll see incredible views of the scenery.
Lake Hallstatt attracts over a million visitors a year, and the months of July and August can be crowded, both in the water and on the small beaches, such as Obertraun, that line up the shores.
The best time to visit is in May or September when the weather is still warm but there are less visitors.
For a completely different experience, you can see Hallstatt in winter – the small village of just 800 residents turns into a winter wonderland when covered with snow.
You can also visit Salzburg from the area on a day trip which is located just over an hour away from Hallstatt.
