‘Lovely’ destination is the cheapest summer holiday hotspot for British families | Travel News | Travel

A “lovely” beach destination in Turkey has been crowned the cheapest summer holiday hotspot for Britons.

Marmaris was named the cheapest summer destination in new Post Office Travel Money research.

However, costs in the Turkish resort had still risen with families likely to experience higher prices than last year.

The beautiful Turkish beach resort has a breathtaking coastline, buzzing nightlife scene and plenty of watersports.

A tourist ‘Arlette J’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “It was a lovely experience. Lovely walks, lovely couple of places to have a drink.”

A three-course family meal costs around £55.88 in Marmaris while a glass of wine came in at just £4.05.

Simon Calder has advised Britons travelling to Turkey to change money once in the country for the best rates.

In the Eurozone, Portugal’s Algarve was the cheapest destination with a bottle of beer costing just £1.66.

Laura Plunkett, head of Travel Money at the Post Office, said: “Although sterling is at a 2023 high against European currencies, inflation has hit local prices abroad just as it has in the UK. This means families should expect to pay more for meals, drinks and other tourist items in most resorts.”

Richard Sofer, commercial director at TUI UK&Ireland, said: “Holidays will always be a priority for our customers, but value for money is clearly more important now than ever before.

“Despite the rising costs of living, many customers aren’t willing to sacrifice their precious annual getaway and we’ve seen a trend in customers opting for more affordable destinations, including Bulgaria and Turkey, with Greece and the Balearics also a firm favourite.”
