‘Lovely’ village is one of Britain’s best with a ‘very pretty lake’ | Travel News | Travel

In a recent ranking of inland towns and villages from Which? Travel, gorgeous Wells took the top spot.

However, a pretty village in the Lake District landed just out the top three and is well worth adding to a staycation bucket list.

Grasmere, a gorgeous village in Cumbria, took the fifth place on the list. It’s named after nearby Grasmere Lake, one of the village’s top attractions.

The pretty spot even caught the eye of one of England’s most famous poets, William Wordsworth. He described it as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found”.

Unsurprisingly, the poet’s links to the town are one of the main reasons tourists add it to their Lake District itinerary.

The poet immediately fell head over heels for Grasmere and moved into Dove Cottage with his sister, Dorothy. The pair lived there for eight years.

Nowadays, over 70,000 tourists visit Dove Cottage every year and visitors can see where the poet wrote some of his most loved works.

A tourist ‘Katherine’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “A very informative museum and cottage with original features depicting the life and poetry of Wordsworth.”

‘Ken P’ said: “An unmissable place to visit if you’re in the area. Dove Cottage is beautiful and has been maintained perfectly. You think that the Wordsworths are coming back any minute.”

Tourists won’t want to miss Lake Grasmere which is located on the outskirts of the picturesque village.

‘Candj1973’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Stunning. This is what the Lake District should be all about. Quiet and without a hint of tacky shops.”

‘Tom from Cardiff’ said: “This is a very pretty and small lake with great views of the surrounding hills. You can imagine what Wordsworth used to see when writing his poetry.”
