Northern Lights map: Where the Aurora Borealis will be visible on July 13 | Travel News | Travel

The Northern Lights will be visible in a number of US states today, according to weather experts. It’s a rare opportunity, as usually the Lights are only visible as far North as Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia.

University of Alaska’s Geophysical Institute predicted the aurora borealis will be “active” today across Alaska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine, as well as parts of Canada like Vancouver.

Initially, it was predicted the natural wonder would be seen from Washington, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, Alaska, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Indiana, Vermont, and Maryland, but these predictions have been rolled back.

Where can Americans see the Northern Lights today?

  • Alaska
  • South Dakota
  • Wisconsin
  • Michigan
  • Maine
  • Vancouver

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The best time to see the Northern Lights is when the sky is clear and dark, generally between 10pm and 2am.

The Geophysical Institute advises: “The best time to watch for aurora is three or four hours around midnight, but aurora occurs throughout the night.”

Moon brightness and the weather all can impact visibility too.
