One of Europe’s most walkable cities is a historic gem with a fairytale old town | Travel News | Travel

Austria isn’t always top of British tourists’ bucket lists but the landlocked country has plenty to discover.

If you don’t want the cost of a rental car and would rather explore on foot, there’s nowhere better than the country’s most walkable city.

Gorgeous Salzburg, situated close to the German border, is incredibly beautiful and tourists won’t need a car to explore.

The city is famed as the birthplace of Mozart, one of the world’s most iconic composers, and its old town is incredibly beautiful.

It was also the filming location for The Sound of Music, so fans of the musical are sure to recognise some spots around the city.

Start your day at the Fortress Hohensalzburg, an 11th century castle that overlooks the city. It’s one of Europe’s largest medieval castles and tourists can either walk to the top or take the funicular.

From the castle, it’s just a five minute stroll to the heart of Salzburg’s beautiful Altstadt. Wander the fairytale-like streets to feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

While in the Old Town, tourists can pay a visit to Mozart’s birthplace, visit the Haus der Natur’s aquarium or the Archbishop’s Cathedral.

Cross the river and walk for 15 minutes to reach the Mirabell Palace, part of the city’s UNESCO heritage status.

The palace’s gardens are particularly spectacular while the Baroque staircase has to be seen to be believed.

Head back towards the Old Town to visit Mozart’s former home which is now a museum dedicated to the composer’s life.

Don’t leave this Austrian gem without sampling some of Salzburg’s delicious local cuisine. Kaspressknodel, cheese dumplings, are a popular choice with tourists.

Want a snack while you walk? Try a Bosna, Salzburg’s famous sausage which is usually served in bread with onions, curry powder, ketchup and mustard.

For dessert, don’t miss Mozartkugel – balls of nougat, marzipan and pistachio slathered in dark chocolate.
