The beautiful little seaside town constantly named the prettiest in all of Italy | Travel News | Travel

A beautiful little seaside in has been constantly named the prettiest of all because of its cliffside pastel buildings, waterside cafes, and clear blue water. Looking like something from a film set, Sorrento in has everything you need for the perfect summer break.

The lively coastal is not located on the famous Amalfi Coast, but instead on the Sorrentine Peninsula in the region of Campania in southern Italy between the Bay of Naples and the famed coastline.

The main attractions around the include activities such as diving, fishing, boat excursions, and Marina Grande with luxurious yachts and fantastic seafood eateries.

However, just a brief walk from the shore lies more to explore, such as Piazza Tasso, a bustling town square adorned with charming cafes and family-owned stores.

The town boasts several historical monuments like the famous 14th-century Church of San Francesco, Cathedral and Basilica di Sant’Antonino

Named after the patron saint of Sorrento, the town’s oldest church, Basilica di Sant’Antonino, doesn’t look much like a regular church from the outside.

But once you step inside, you will find a more traditional church atmosphere with Roman artefacts, dark medieval paintings, a beautifully decorated ceiling, and an interesting detail: two whale ribs displayed near the entrance in the lobby.

Another thing to look out for is The Sorrento Cathedral which is dedicated to the Saints Phillip and James and it is said to be risen on the ruins of an ancient Temple dedicated to Jupiter.

Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s central square, was constructed in 1866 and takes its name from the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. It’s a bustling centre adorned with vibrant buildings encircling a statue of St. Antonino Abbate, and dotted with citrus trees for an extra burst of colour.

If you are looking to pick up some souvenirs, Sorrento has fantastic shopping options. On the main street of Corso Italia, you will find plenty of boutiques and clothing stores.

Meanwhile, the historic centre’s winding lanes, starting from Via San Cesareo and spreading outwards, are filled with wood inlay workshops, leather goods stores, Limoncello shops, and gourmet food stores.

Visitors who have been to the magical town couldn’t stop boasting about it on TripAdvisor, where people share their travel experiences.

One user said: “What attracted me to Sorrento is all the surroundings of the Amalfi Coast, Pompei Capri, and Ischia which I visited. I was based at Puolo a beach near Sorrento, it was very crowded at that time of the year, but it was still relaxed in some ways. I will always go back when I can.”

Another user said: “Sorrento is a very charming mid-sized town on the coast of Italy, which is centrally located to be able to visit many desirable tourist attractions.

“Naples, Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii, Positano Amalfi, Ravello, & Capri are all within about 1 hour away. Sorrento was an excellent ‘home base’ because of the excellent large shopping & restaurant district.

“We were able to take the hydrofoil ferry from Sorrento’s port to get to Capri and hired a private car service to drive us up the Amalfi Coast, as well as to Pompeii. We loved this amazing town and would go back in a heartbeat!!”
