The prettiest city in the UK is packed with landmarks – and it isn’t London | Travel News | Travel

London is the UK’s most visited city. But while the Big Smoke is the UK’s leading destination, it’s not all that great to look at, according to a new survey from the expert team at swiftdirectblinds.

In a new study, the team searched for Britain’s prettiest city looking at the number of listed buildings, landmarks and social media views.

Edinburgh soared to the top of this year’s ranking with more than 2,000 listed buildings per 100,000 residents and plenty of social media attention.

The Scottish capital is famed for its annual Fringe Festival, cobblestone streets and Edinburgh Castle, which is one of its premier attractions. Tourists might want to avoid it during peak season however, as it’s also one of Europe’s most overcrowded landmarks.

Queen Victoria first visited Scotland in 1842 and had plenty of compliments for the famous capital city.

The monarch reportedly said: “The view of Edinburgh from the road before you enter Leith is quite enchanting, it is, as Albert said, fairy-like and what you would only imagine as a thing to dream of, or to see in a picture.”

The playwright and author Oscar Wilde was slightly less impressed but still described the Scottish capital as “quite lovely-bits of it”.

Perhaps the prettiest part of the city, Edinburgh Old Town is also one of the capital’s most walkable areas. A tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “The old town has so much character!”
