A pretty little seaside town packed with sandy beaches, cobblestone streets, and rocky mountains is so undiscovered that hardly any British tourists have heard about it.
Nin is among the oldest towns in Croatia. It features well-preserved medieval architecture, including the Church of St Nicholas, which is one of the smallest cathedrals in the world.
It also has a notable Romanesque church, the Church of the Holy Cross, and remnants of ancient city walls.
During medieval times, this small town located 16km northwest of Zadar served as the residence for Croatia’s kings and archbishops.
Today it still possesses a charming fairytale-like atmosphere.
Its historic centre is situated on a small island within a bay nearly surrounded by a sandy peninsula, connected to the mainland by two low stone bridges.
The town is famous for its long sandy beaches, particularly the Queen’s Beach (Kraljičina plaža), which is known for its shallow waters and therapeutic mud. These beaches attract tourists seeking relaxation and wellness.
Nin’s proximity to other destinations such as Zadar, with its famous Sea Organ and Roman ruins, and the stunning islands of the Zadar archipelago, makes it an ideal base for exploring the region.
However, in recent years, Nin has become a popular tourist destination due to its historical sites, natural beauty, and recreational activities such as windsurfing and kiteboarding.
Nin’s rich history – including ancient Greek and Roman eras – is vividly showcased at the Nin Museum of Antiquities nearby.
After crossing the bridge, visitors can explore the Solina Nin Salt Museum, providing an intriguing glimpse into the town’s 2,000-year-old salt industry.

“Nice beach, a bar available, decent prices. 20 euro for 2 sunbeds, clean sandy beach, and family-friendly.”
