The pretty little UK seaside town that’s ‘always been the coolest place in Cornwall’ | Travel News | Travel

Cornwall is full of beautiful and historic market towns, but one is known for its vibrant student life and art scene.

Falmouth was described as being Cornwall’s “cooler town” by TimeOut, who ranked it ninth on its 15th best places to visit in the UK. The presence of campuses from both Exeter and Falmouth universities gives it a younger feel – but it has regardless retained its beautiful cobbled streets, folky music scene and breathtaking sea views.

TimeOut wrote that new music venue The Cornish Bank, alongside cult folk muic night Klub Nos Lowen and up and coming indie bands means “this spot is the ideal place to absorb some of the county’s best culture.”

Based around the world’s third largest deep-water harbour, Falmouth is based on the Fal River, and is famous for its creative buzz.

Art galleries show contemporary works and independent films and live bands can be seen at its many venues.

Four world-class beaches are right on the doorstep in Falmouth, with Castle beach, Gyllyngvase beach, Swanpool beach and Maenporth beach all perfect for families to enjoy various watersports including surfing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, and diving.

It is also a great spot for foodies. Quaint cafes line the streets, while the harbour means there is always a supply of fresh fish.

Top restaurants include the Gylly Beach cafe, with fantastic food and great sea views – a great spot for dinner or to enjoy a hot chocolate with blankets provided in the evenings. TripAdvisor reviews praise the “fabulous food” and “amazing service”

There is also a plethora of seafood restaurants – including the Shack, very near the harbourside.

One reviewer said: “Never tackled a crab before, the manager politely showed us the way, and what a fantastic experience it was. The presentation was second to none, and flavours divine.

“So next time you’re in Falmouth I fully recommend you visit the Shack first, rest assured you won’t be disappointed.”

The town maintains its maritime history, however. The multi award winning National Maritime Museum Cornwall houses a huge collection of boats, retells stories of intrepid explorers and provides an observation window where you can see what’s happening underwater in the harbour.

Meanwhile, Pendennis castle, built by Henry VIII, can be visited complete with sounds and smells to provide a full experience.
