The pretty seaside town in Scotland with lovely high street | UK | Travel

This Scottish town has been voted home to one of the best high streets in the UK, but you might not have heard of it.

North Berwick is just a half an hour long train journey from Edinburgh Waverley, so it is ideal for a day trip.

Among its many attractions, this seaside town has a world-renowned golf course, several shops and independent cafes as well as striking coastal views.

It is also known for its links to famous Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson as well as for its dark history chapter of witch trials.

The town has been named by The Times as having one of the loveliest high streets in the UK. Here, can be found a range of bakeries much loved among visitors, including the Bostock Bakery, which sells award-winning pastries.

A must-do for visitors to North Berwick is a visit to Tantallon Castle. Set on the edge of the cliff, the castle towers over incredible views of the North Sea and Bass Rock. It was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers in the siege of 1651 and has been well preserved ever since for visitors to learn about its history.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. The castle is huge and you can go inside on your own.

“Some areas were closed but this did not detract from the experience of being in a very old castle with an incredible history. It’s more of a wild castle than, say, Edinburgh or Stirling. The views are stunning of the sea and the countryside.”

For those who are feeling adventurous, a cycle around the coast is a great way to explore and see the views this part of Scotland offers.

Another popular attraction is the Scottish Seabird Centre. This unique conservation and education charity provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the wildlife of the area.

They also offer a range of boat trips around the islands in the Firth of Forth, including around Bass Rock. You can take these trips anytime from late March to early October.
