New York might be one of the world’s most expensive cities but it’s also a leading tourist destination. From the Empire State Building to the Rockefeller Building, Brits can’t get enough of the USA’s Big Apple.
However, there’s one popular attraction that left tourists less than impressed. Times Square, a major tourist destination and central hub, was described as “horrendous”.
‘Lorna H’ claimed on Tripadvisor: “As I was staying just off Times Square, I was there a lot. On a morning, it’s less busy but on an evening, it’s so busy and horrendous.
“People are rude and there are many vendors selling bus tours who will not take no as an answer and need to be in your face.”
‘Beata Malgorzata’ said: “It is extremely busy. In the evening, you cannot simply walk there, it is extremely noisy and busy. It was on my to see list, I ticked it and that is all. Not my cup of tea unfortunately.”
‘Eiu80’ said: “Crazy crowds. Avoid on the weekends in December. People pay no attention to where they are going as they are staring at their phones and run into people.”
Around 330,000 people pass through Times Square every day and it is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian crossings.
Often featured in films, the iconic square is busiest on New Year’s Eve for the annual ball drop event.
As Times Square is so popular, tourists also need to watch out for pickpockets who might target people in the crowd.
‘Cosmogirl29’ said: “Pickpockets are common so definitely keep wallets, phones and purses securely fastened. As others have mentioned, beware of the scammers dressed as Disney characters pressuring to take photos for a fee.”
Tourists should always check how much an actor is charging before agreeing to take their photo with a character.
