Tourists slammed as local resident says ‘small seaside town’ is ruined by visitors | Travel News | Travel

A local resident in a “small coastal town” has said they struggle to deal with their town’s tourism industry.

The anonymous local wrote on Reddit: “I live in a tourism hotspot and it annoys the h*** out of me and everyone else.

“Unfortunately it is one of the problems in living in a beautiful place, but during the summer it is a massive pain.

“While it of course brings jobs and money into the local area, on a personal level, it is far more negative than positive.”

Many tourist hotspots are struggling to cope with an influx of tourists post-pandemic. Venice has introduced a daily fee and Amsterdam has raised its tourist tax to be the highest in Europe.

The local resident added: “Ours is a small coastal town and just was never designed to take the volumes of people.

“Roads get blocked and quite frankly the behaviour of many visitors is utterly appalling, leaving rubbish and illegal parking.”

Another person agreed saying: “I live in a city that gets flooded with tourists every summer. I rely on public transport to get to work and from April until mid-October, I basically need to wake up half an hour early to get to work on time because there’s so much extra traffic.

“On top of that, the buses and trains are so full that I get to enjoy my trip to and from work standing in a tight, sweaty, crowded bus with lots of loud tourists and their massive backpacks and suitcases.”

Public transport can get overcrowded during peak tourist season which can make it difficult for local residents to get around.
