With 15 national parks across the UK, British tourists are spoilt for choice when it comes to booking an active staycation.
But the most popular parks, such as the Lake District and Peak District, can become a little crowded during peak season.
Travel expert Simon Calder even warned British tourists to steer clear of The Lake District in a campervan this year.
If you’re looking for somewhere with fewer crowds, the Cairngorms National Park is incredibly beautiful.
In general, around two million tourists visit the Cairngorms every year, compared to 18 million in the Lake District.
It’s also the UK’s biggest national park, at a whopping 4,528 square kilometres, meaning it’s easy to escape any other tourists.
Situated in the Scottish Highlands, the Cairngorms are breathtaking and packed with activities for tourists.
During summer, look out for a Highland Games gathering where local residents compete in events such as dancing, tug o’war and tossing the caber.
Tourists who are feeling particularly adventurous could go for a dip in a Cairngorms loch but make sure to check the water temperature first.
Hike up a munro (a mountain over 3,000 feet tall) for spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Look up routes to find a path suitable for your level.
Children will love the local wildlife with chances to spot wildcats, red squirrels and deer across the park.
It is Scotland, so the weather can’t be guaranteed, but if you’re hit by a wet day or two, there’s several indoor activities to keep you amused.
Explore one of the area’s castles or book a tour of a local whiskey distillery. Outside of August, it’s possible to visit Balmoral Castle, one of the Royal Family’s favourite family homes.
The Cairngorms can be explored on a budget if you stay at a camping site but there are also many luxury hotels in the area.
