4. Costa del Sol, Spain

Much like its name suggests, the Costa del Sol is a haven for those seeking a sunny escape.

Though it’s much less hot than in the peak summer months, the average daily maximum hits a toasty 25C in the region making it the perfect place for swimming in the sea, lounging by the pool or tucking away in the shade with an ice-cold cocktail.

For those seeking something a little further afield, South Africa could be the perfect sunny hotspot. Given it’s a long-haul destination, prices are more expensive than UK holidays, but the summer season is just hotting up in September.

Across the country, the average maximum temperature varies from around 17C in Agulhas to 31C in Kruger National Park.

In the coastal capital of Cape Town, the average high is a pleasant 21C, perfect for sunbathing or splashing about in the sea.

Or, if you want to head inland to the city of Johannesburg, average highs sit at approximately 24C.
