While British expats move abroad for a variety of reasons, a tax-free salary can be a tempting option for many. The expert team at William Russell have ranked the world’s tax-free countries on affordability.
The team looked at the cost of flights from the UK, the cost of an apartment, average monthly salary and the cost of utilities to find the winner.
Topping the list was Oman in the Middle East, which was the cheapest country to buy or rent an apartment in on average. Monthly rent came in at just £380 a month.
The average salary in Oman is £1,775 per month, meaning rent wouldn’t take much from an expat’s income.
So what’s life like as a British expat in Oman?
A British expat told InterNations: “The local people are very friendly and make you feel very welcome in the relaxed atmosphere.”
Oman was actually rated as one of the friendliest countries in the world towards expats, ranking only behind Mexico in InterNations’ 2022 survey. Nearly two in three expats said it was easy to make friends in Oman.
Most expats choose to live in Muscat, Oman’s capital city. Its souks are world-renowned and the country also has some excellent seafood restaurants.
Oman also has some impressive natural attractions, including the Bimmah sinkhole, a 20m deep spot used for cliff diving and swimming.
Expats can also watch turtles hatch at Ras Al Jinz, which is home to five of the world’s seven sea turtle species.
The Middle East dominated the tax-free expat affordability ranking while Monaco was the only European country to make the list.
