World’s most liveable city where British expats won’t need a car | Travel News | Travel

Feeling fed up in the UK? An incredible city in the Netherlands has just been named as one of the world’s best places to live.

While Spain is usually the leading destination for British expats, Eindhoven could be a better alternative. The Dutch city was named as the world’s second best place to live in a recent ranking from the team at ECA International.

The brand new study looked at safety, air quality, career opportunities, healthcare, social life and housing to find the best destinations in the world for expats.

A Swiss city took the top spot but British expats may find better job opportunities and cheaper prices in Eindhoven.

Located in the south of the Netherlands, Eindhoven is often known as the ‘City of Light’ due to its role in the production of lightbulbs in the 19th century.

Neil Ashman, senior locations rating analyst at ECA, said: “It’s not surprising to see smaller European locations like Eindhoven in the top 10.

“They tend to have excellent facilities and infrastructure, as larger cities do, but they also benefit from lower crime rates and air pollution levels than big cities.”

According to Expat Arrivals, it’s easy to get around Eindhoven using a bike or on foot as the city centre is pedestrianised and compact. A spokesperson said: “Driving in Eindhoven is not recommended, especially as parking is limited, and most expats get by without a vehicle.”

There are direct flights from Manchester and London to Eindhoven and the journey takes under an hour and a half.

British expats in Eindhoven will also be able to get the train to Amsterdam in under an hour and a half while they will also be close to the German and Belgian border.

Eindhoven hosts an annual light festival in November. The GLOW festival sees the city decorated with installations while performances also take place.
